Just as the vacuum tube gave way to the transistor, and the transistor to the electronic chip, so it too may someday find itself on the scrap heap of high-tech history, replaced by a new generation of chips that will use the properties of light to more data much more quickly and cheaply than today's technology allows.

That's the thinking of a White Plains developer of light-based or "photonic" technology that is projecting it will grow to nine-figure revenues over the next three to five years by licensing its know-how to some of the world's biggest manufacturers of fiber-optic networks.
