REPUBLICAN vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin electrified her party's convention as she proclaimed: "I'm just your average hockey mom." The 44-year-old Alaskan governor made a speech which combined a twopronged defence of the political CV critics say is thin and the family whose teenage pregnancy cast a shadow over her nomination, with a savage attack on Barack Obama.

It was the political speech of a lifetime and finally lit the touchpaper on a lacklustre Republican convention.
