In a shifting economy, running a dance studio requires having business savvy as well as being an enthusiastic dance educator. Here six owners from around the country talk about what's working for them and how they stay successful. Regardless of the genres they teach or the local dance scene, a common thread unites them: their true passion for dance.

BROADWAY SOUTH DANCE

Owner: Michelle Adams-Meeker

Location: Mobile, AL

www.broadwaysouthdance.com

Founded: 2006

Focus: All disciplines with special focus on Broadway theater dance

Students: 340

Teachers: 8

Studios: 3

Staffing Sense: Before a teacher is hired, Adams-Meeker invites them to substitute-teach a class. To build a team atmosphere, she provides a teacher lounge. "They spend a lot of hours here, so I want them to have a place to hang out."

Reconsidering Mistakes: At first, the studio didn't offer enough classes for 3- to 5-year-aids. Since realizing the demand, the studio offers this level of class every day.

Dream Purchase: Extra space for a student lounge.
