Improvisation is no longer just an outpost of experimental dance. Choreographers are asking dancers to improvise to help generate movement. It's also an essential tool to develop a command of one's instrument. Forward-thinking instructors are incorporating improvisation into their lesson plans to foster creativity, intellectual independence, and courage.

But for students trained only to watch and replicate steps, improvisation can be intimidating. "A lot of conversations come up around the statement 'But this looks ugly and weird,'" says former Ballett Frankfurt dancer Helen Pickett, who teaches a Forsythe-based method of improvisation. "Take your eyes away from the mirror. Concentrate on the concept."
