As theories of Whiteness made visible the power and privilege vested in the social construction of normative and 'marked' racial categories, Povinelli seeks to critically examine how and why liberal 'norms' of sociality, intimacy and 'love' are dominant norms within settler colonies. Building upon her earlier work on the politics of cultural recognition, Empire of Love explores the conditions and constraints of recognition as regards 'divergent' forms of love and intimacy within the framework of cultural difference in the US and Australia.
