Linoleum over cement floors, torn mylar rolling mirrors, heavy portable barres--not necessarily a recipe for studio success. But in four years Deirdre Pirchio, artistic director at Northern Valley Dance Academy, had proved that working in a difficult space didn't deter business. And when she decided that growing to the next level meant a move, her decision to shape an abandoned retail outlet into a professional quality studio proved a chance to make long-held dreams come true.
With more than 200 students, three competitive dance teams and classes in ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, lyrical, and hip hop, her Demarest, New Jersey, studio had reached maximum capacity a year ago. Located in an 1,100-square-foot church hall, bad floors and mirrors were only half the problem.
