For those of us who came of age in the '60s, 2008 has been a tough year. The news media won't let us forget that it's the 40th anniversary--40th!--of events that shook us to the core and changed history: the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, the riots in Detroit and Los Angeles, the student revolts that swept the planet, the Soviet tanks that quashed the Prague spring.

Alongside such markers, the opening of Hair on Broadway hardly seems worth revisiting. Yet it, too, was an unmistakable emblem of the cultural and political upheavals of the day.
