In 1985, three employees of the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) inspected the 2 1/2-mile long Highbury Interceptor tunnel by walking through it. During this inspection of the Vancouver, British Columbia, sewer and drainage tunnel, sewage was temporarily diverted into the ocean.

This is an example of a once-common inspection method that is unacceptable by today's standards. With new regulations on the environment, public safety, and the health and safety of workers, new technologies are now being used to inspect our aging infrastructure.

Constructed in 1963, the Highbury Interceptor tunnel is a single tunnel, 9 1/2 feet in diameter. The tunnel conveys combined sanitary and stormwater from more than 50% of the Vancouver sewage area to the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The tunnel section is 2.6 miles long and 394 feet deep...
