Surge in jobless rate surprises even veteran economy watchers.

The San Diego region lost more ground to an economy that now appears mired in a recession, as more than 7,000 people joined the ranks of the jobless in June, pushing the unemployment rate to 5.9 percent, compared with 5.5 percent in May and 4.6 percent in June 2007.

Among those looking for work last week was Alvin Richmond, who was refurbishing houses for a contractor up to two months ago. He's now seeking a job at a Marshalls store that is set to open next month in City Heights.

"Right now I'm looking for any kind of work. I was working a bit at a store part time stacking shelves, but that's not full time," said the 43-year-old who lives in the Skyline neighborhood of Southeast San Diego.
