Attention to the George W. Bush presidency has been eclipsed by raucous presidential campaigns, but as the administration comes to an end, a new season of academic presidential postmortem analysis is beginning. The George W. Bush Legacy is an early such endeavor, the fifth book in a series that began with George H. W. Bush's presidency. The editors ask, "How much of what [George W. Bush] leaves behind, will be of the man, and how much of the times?" (p. 3). They conclude that his presidency is a "presidency of consequence," one that is long on vision but short on prudence. Bush will be known for his ideological polarization of the political parties, his expansion of presidential power, and his appointment of a more conservative federal judiciary.
