SECOND OF TWO EDITORIALS

There are relatively few contested races in the Aug. 8 primaries for seats in the Missouri House. On Tuesday, the Post-Dispatch offered its recommendations in contested races in St. Louis City and north St. Louis County. Today we look at the contested races in west and south St. Louis County, and one seat each in Lincoln, St. Charles and Jefferson counties.

District 11 -- Democrats: Ed Schieffer, a former farmer, teacher and youth counselor, is among three Democrats vying for the Lincoln County seat vacated by Wayne Henke, who is running for state Senate. Mr. Schieffer, 56, of Troy, wants to restore the Medicaid cuts and raise the pay of state human-services workers. Low pay and high turnover among employees are partly responsible for recent reports of abuse and neglect in state facilities, he says. Mr. Schieffer opposes the use of eminent domain for private development and wants to reform Missouri's Tax Increment Financing law. Ed Schieffer is the choice over Jim Volmert, 63, of Moscow Mills, and Jeffrey S. Keiser, 39, of Old Monroe.
