Hop to it people. This is the year to love a local frog.

Forget everything you know about frogs turning into handsome princes.

Real-life frogs are cool characters all on their own - warts and all.

That explains why they have their own unique honor in 2008. Zoologists have declared it the Year of the Frog.

In conjunction with Leap Year, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums opted to give 2008 to the little leapers to help draw attention to the plight they face worldwide.

Frogs are disappearing at an alarming rate.

That's true in DuPage and Kane Counties as well, where the wood frog once hopped freely. And we're not talking millennia ago, either. Just 40 years ago they popped up in ponds all over the region.

Now, there's nary a distinctive "racket racket racket" to be heard.

With assistance from some area experts, we've put together a list of little guys you might be able to spot around the suburbs.
