The columnist-reader relationship in this newspaper nook has long worked like this: You ask the questions, I answer them. But today, I'm doing the asking:

What's with these long receipts at stores? It used to be, you bought something and your receipt was the size of a student body card. Now you buy something and you're handed a kite tail - only wider. I bought one item at Circuit City - one - and got a 22-inch-by-4 1/2 -inch receipt that's slightly more detailed than my home mortgage. Two languages. A pitch to have me take a survey. Refund info. The works.
