If it is indeed a fact that more Americans get their daily dose of news from Jay Leno, Dave Letterman, and Jon Stewart than from Brian Williams, Katie Couric, and the New York Times, that raises a number of questions: Why do we now abjure traditional news outlets? How skewed is our perception of current events? What does this mean for our democracy? And, of course: Are we doomed?
Russell Peterson's Strange Bedfellows doesn't go so far as to tell us what the future of our democracy holds. Peterson, a professor of American studies at the University of Iowa, has written a thoroughly researched and sometimes quite engaging critique of the role of late-night comedy in our public life--but his political prejudice leads him to a number of contradictory conclusions, and, as to whether or not we are doomed, he replies with a resounding, unequivocal . . . that depends.
