Next year, Springfield's best known law firm will celebrate its 60th birthday. It also will mark 45 years of service as the city attorney's office. Those may not be records, but they certainly are notable in the annals of Oregon law.

The latest chapter came in the form of a March business news item reporting that Bill Van Vactor had joined what will now be Leahy, Van Vactor and Cox.

This was no surprise. Van Vactor had said when he announced his resignation as Lane County administrator in mid-2007 that he would join Leahy's firm.

The first chapters of this story were written by the founder, Edward Harms Jr. - Ed, as he was universally known. Harms was Springfield's most prominent civic and political figure of the last half of the 20th century.

Born in Roseburg, he graduated from Eugene High School in 1941, which is ironic given the historic rivalry between Eugene and Springfield. Just...
