A lawsuit settlement announced Wednesday may be the first step in limiting the use of dozens of pesticides common on farms, in forests and around homes and gardens but that pose a threat to salmon and steelhead already at risk of extinction.

The National Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides, a Eugene-based group, announced the settlement with the National Marine Fisheries Service, the federal agency charged with protecting ocean-going species.
