"Quaint" is the kind of word that sends theater people running for the exits.

"We want to stay away from that word `quaint,'?" director Richard Jessup said during a rehearsal last week for "Brigadoon," the second musical being staged this summer by the Oregon Festival of American Music.

"I would like the words to be `natural.' `Honest.' `Simple.'?"

Jessup is referring to all that sheer Scottishness, which in lesser hands might overwhelm the show with kilts, tartans and brogues - not to mention a sticky sweet fantasy quality.
