Harold and Flora Codman know more than a thing or two about music that soothes hard times.

That's exactly why their daughter Lisa Arkin bought the Eugene couple a ticket to a special concert at this year's Oregon Festival of American Music.

OFAM kicks off tonight at the Hult Center with a gala opening called "Cotton Club Stomp." It begins the festival's three-week exploration, through concerts, lectures and films, of how music and entertainment helped Americans cope during the Depression and World War II.

Enter the Codmans.

Flip back 63 years and you'll find Harold, a nervous young staff sergeant, skinny from dengue fever and yellow from malaria medication, just back from three years of vicious fighting in the jungles of New Guinea and around the Pacific.
