Islendingabok, written by Ari porgilsson some time between 1122 and 1133, is a very famous work, being "the first surviving written history of the Icelanders and the first work to be written in the vernacular" (ix). Kristni saga, whose author is unknown and which is tentatively assigned to the mid-thirteenth century, is much more the property of specialists. Yet these works have much in common, not only in that they both recount the history of the conversion of Iceland, but also in their concern for Icelandic law and their use of oral tradition and genealogy, as their new translator, Sian Gronlie, points out (xlv).
