The famed Russian company presented six programs that spanned its history from Petipa to Forsythe. In a wildly uneven season that showed us the changing aesthetics of the Kirov, the lows were disappointing, but the highs were spectacular.

The excitement came in the dramatic power of the best of the ballerinas. They could each create a mood that permeated the entire stage. In the Fokine program alone, the extremes were breathtaking. On one end was Uliana Lopatkina's ethereal rendition of The Dying Swan--a private, spiritual encounter with death. Her swan was restrained, no sudden moves from her ghostly arms, and you held your breath at the slightest pause.

At the opposite end was Diana Vishneva's outrageously sexual Zobeide in Scheherazade. She prowled the stage, displaying her heat and availability with every shift of her glorious rib cage. With her full lips parted, she gave off the sense of enjoying her own body, making the favorite slave almost extraneous....
