When I was an officer candidate in the Army, I had an old, crusty sergeant major who entertained us young, eager soldiers with war stories from Vietnam. Out in the field, we would sit on the ground silently listening to his tales about heroic feats of valor.
He would stand there, leaning on his carved walking stick, delivering stories from behind a cloud of cigar smoke. None of us knew whether the stories were true or not, since veterans who have experienced the true horrors of combat typically cannot, or do not, talk about it. Nevertheless, the stories captured our attention for hours. The old sergeant major storyteller would always begin with the same phrase: "There I was, surrounded by the enemy ..."
Years later, this phrase suddenly leapt to mind in a very different setting. I was trying a car...
