More than 1,000 genetic tests available today can predict a person's propensity for developing everything from Alzheimer's to Tay-Sachs disease--but some people have avoided the tests for fear that their genetic information might be used against them. A new law is likely to allay some of those fears and encourage scientific research.

In May, President Bush signed into law the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) after 13 years of congressional debate on the issue.

"GINA will do more than stamp out a new form of discrimination, as important as that is," said Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) at a congressional hearing on the bill. "It will also help us to resurrect our country's proud history of innovative, advanced scientific and medical research." Slaughter, a biochemist, cosponsored the House version of the legislation.
