There are many success stories out there of businesses that started with an idea drafted on a napkin, or in the case of Koni Corp. in Otay Mesa, an idea built on a foundation of bedspreads and draperies.

President and Chief Executive Officer Koni Kim, who was born in South Korea, started a small company in a guest house that she named Koniart. Her business serviced the hospitality industry with custom textiles and designs that were well-received by interior designers. She quickly outgrew the house and moved operations in 1978 to a 30,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Alhambra.

In 1989, Koniart merged with Orange County-based Southwest Quilted Products Inc., a soft goods manufacturer owned by Joe E. Robertson.

The two recognized that the synergy between the two businesses would bring better service to the hotel industry by providing a total soft goods package. The new company was named Kojo, an acronym based on a blend of their first names, Koni and Joe. Kim has served as president of Kojo since its inception.
