One local hotel executive has compared filling rooms in the summertime to selling Christmas trees in December.

When Bill Evans, whose family owns the Catamaran and Bahia resort hotels as well as The Lodge at Torrey Pines, made that statement a while back, he wasn't being smug. He was merely pointing out that hoteliers face a minimal challenge trying to attract vacationers to come and romp in the surf during the peak travel season. That's as easy as, well, hawking chopped pines at Christmastime. The real challenge, he said, is to keep the tourism count up during the off-peak months of September through May.

That still holds true, but record-setting gasoline prices and a souring economy have thrown a new dynamic into the equation.
