Byline: HOME COOKING By Jim Boyd The Register-Guard

Gene Obersinner of Eugene cooks mainly for his wife, Maryanne, and himself. But she nominated him for The Register-Guard's Home Cooking column not only because he's a good cook, but also because he's teaching weekly cooking classes for adult survivors of traumatic head injuries.

Obersinner is the assistant program manager for ShelterCare's Uhlhorn Program, which operates the Uhlhorn Apartments at 689 W. 13th Ave. and the Kourt Apartments at 50 Kourt Drive for up to 39 people who have suffered head injuries.

"What I decided a couple months ago was to combine my love of cooking with my service to the clients," Obersinner said.

"I approached my boss, the program manager, and said, 'Hey, you know, I think it would be cool to have a cooking class.'

"We have life skills classes and memory skills classes for them to help them regain skills they lost at the time of the accident and I thought, What about a cooking skills class? This is a really practical thing that they need to know how to do and, quite frankly, a lot of the clients, when they have their head injury, they lose a lot of memory, the short-term memory goes and they lose a lot of confidence in their ability to remember and prepare things."
