No room at the inn - any inn

I'm an elementary school teacher of 34 years, and have coached high school girls' track for 22 years.

I am writing to explain why my wife and I, along with many others, will not be in Eugene to attend the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials - even though we wanted to. In the fall of 2006, I started calling hotels and motels in and around Eugene, trying to reserve a room. Everyone said to call back later. Nine months later, I called and always got the same answer: "There is no room at the inn!" No one in a 50-mile radius of Eugene would reserve a room for us.

We've been coming to Eugene since 1976 for our first Olympic Trials. We've missed only three since then. Now we are going to miss our fourth. I wrote the mayor of Eugene and the president of the chamber of commerce a year and a half ago.

We are going to miss the best track meet in the United States. I love track, and I believe most people in Track Town, USA, love track as well, but they don't realize how blessed they are. They live so close that they don't need a room at the inn.
