A few days ago, sprinter Tyson Gay was telling reporters in Eugene about some technical adjustments he's been emphasizing in his start for the 100 meters since he lost to Usain Bolt when the 6-foot-5 Jamaican set the world record of 9.72 seconds in New York last month.
He said that in reviewing the race with one of his coaches, Jon Drummond, they realized that in the first 10 meters Gay had been "butt-kicking," bringing his heels too far back instead of keeping his knees driving forward.

And from some sprinters, in other eras, that would have brought a frosty glare.
But Gay did so, sincerely, without showing off, and it exemplified what others have been saying and writing about the former University of Arkansas star who won three gold medals (100, 200 and 4x100 relay) in the 2007 World Championships - that his humility, down-home politeness and soft-spoken approachability are refreshing in an event not always characterized by those traits.
