Local and out-of-town runners, as well as fans of the sport, will have more than enough reason to celebrate this Fourth of July. And organizers of the annual Butte to Butte road race and fitness walk expect them to include the holiday event in their festivities.

William Wyckoff, whose Eclectic Edge Events is in its second year organizing the modern-day version scheduled for an 8 a.m. start Friday, expects to break last year's record of 4,600 participants and is preparing for as many as 10,000, including some of the hundreds of fans, coaches and media in town for the Olympic Trials.

Just how many is anybody's guess, but for those unfamiliar with the event, a little history is in order.

Storm the Butte - the precursor to the Butte to Butte - was expected to draw 100 die-hard runners for a run up Spencer Butte estimated at the time to be one mile with a vertical rise of 900 feet.
