Scott County residents are one step closer to seeing their long-awaited new hospital become a reality.

The $22-million, 35-bed facility being built south of Interstate 20 between Jackson and Meridian will replace the outdated 25-bed, 45,000-square-foot facility located in Forest, thanks in part to funding provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development.

"Most rural hospitals were built or renovated with Hill-Burton grant money in the 1950s, and they've been patched to keep functional, but the time is coming soon when they'll be completely outdated," said Mendal Kemp, director for the Mississippi Hospital Association's Center for Rural Health. "USDA is the only entity that's stepped forward with much-needed money for major renovations and/or hospital replacement."
