For the past decade, Jesuit has set the standard by which all Oregon high school girls soccer teams are measured.

The Crusaders have won eight of the past 10 state titles, compiled an overall record of 185 wins, eight losses and 11 ties, and have never lost to any team in the state more than once.

Until last week.

Sheldon became the first club to accomplish that feat when it traveled to Jesuit's home field and beat the Crusaders, 2-0.

The Irish, of course, knocked off Jesuit by the same score in last year's OSAA Class 4A semifinals, before marching past Lincoln in the championship match to bring home the school's first state title in girls soccer.

In last year's playoff match, Jesuit coach Ken Skipper credited Sheldon with not only beating the Crusaders, but `outplaying' them as well, something he has rarely witnessed in his seven years as head coach.

And he sees no signs of a letdown.

`No question, Sheldon is the team to beat this year,' Skipper said. `I'm impressed with this group. They're strong, athletic and play great team defense. ... They're playing good teams and shutting...
