The Government's commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of our communities was underlined today as the Home Secretary, David Blunkett, announced record numbers of police and community support officers and extra funding for counter-terrorism measures.

An all time high of 139,728 police officers backed up by 4,094 community support officers (CSOs) are now working together to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in our communities. The Home Secretary also said today that the first 2,000 of an expansion in the numbers of CSOs - which will see 25,000 CSOs and wardens on our streets to complement the role of police officers - will be in place by the end of this financial year.

In addition, Mr Blunkett announced an additional GBP90 million of counter-terrorism funding next year, which will include funding to recruit additional special branch and other counter terrorism officers, and strengthen regional and national capacity. These officers will work hand in hand with the Security Service to carry out regional surveillance and investigations into terrorist activity. This will ensure that the Government continues to increase the amount spent on counter-terrorism - which will have doubled by 2008 since 11 September 2001.

"The Government is reforming and modernising the police service to ensure the protection of aw-abiding citizens and recreate a culture of respect.

"We owe a debt of gratitude to our police and security services, who risk their lives every day to keep us safe. But the best tribute we can pay is to continue investing in them.

"The latest figures from August this year show we now have record numbers of police across our country - 139,728 in England and Wales, an increase of more than 10,000 in just two years, the largest expansion ever in our policing service.
