South Pacific's grunts: an ensemble crammed with out-of-town stars.

Peggy Sawyer, the ingenue of 42nd Street, comes to New York, lands a spot in the chorus of a Broadway show, takes over for the leading lady, and presumably never looks back. Real life is rarely that neat, and you only have to peruse the ensemble bios in the program for Lincoln Center Theater's acclaimed new production of South Pacific to see what I mean.

First, a word about the show. Although I've loved it--really, really loved it--ever since seeing the movie as a girl, I worried about how this wonderful Rodgers and Hammerstein classic would fare more than half a century after its 1949 Broadway premiere. Having seen a ploddingly earnest revival in the '80s, I knew that the show can come off as a stodgy relic. Director Bartlett Sher has approached this South Pacific no less earnestly, even underlining its messages about racial prejudice and global politics.
