Lauren Fadeley's young adulthood offers the kind of storyline that every aspiring ballerina dreams about. Dancing from age 4, she moved to New York at 15 to study at the School of American Ballet. A year later, she was picked up by New York City Ballet, first as an apprentice, then as a corps member.

But in her second year she broke her foot, sparking a major reconsideration of her future. "I realized that you can't dance forever," she says. "Plus, I wasn't ready to be in a company. I needed more training, and I'd always wanted an education." Drawn to its strong reputation and connections, Fadeley auditioned for the ballet program at Indiana University.
