"The persistent flapping of a butterfly wing can change global weather patterns," he said. "We have week in and week out, since 1997, been reporting gas prices. It has kept us knowledgeable about competitive issues and serves as a valuable counter spin to the industry, which used to be the source of the data before. By continually reporting on prices, it's opened up a huge media ear."
UCAN's work, said Langley, is paying off.
"We no longer see this huge, 25- to 30-cents-a-gallon gouge gap between Los Angeles and San Diego and, in the last couple of years, it's been common for us to have cheaper prices than L.A."
All this, he said, is because UCAN's been "in the forefront of explaining why so-called supply and demand conditions should not be affecting gas prices."
