...the papers read at the 49th Rencontre Assyri-ologique Internationale, which met at the British Museum in July 2003 in celebration of the museum's 250th anniversary. The theme of the Rencontre, "Nineveh," chosen to highlight the museum's fabulous Assyrian collections, inspired papers on a wide range of topics, approached via a number of theoretical methodologies. The British School of Archaeology in Iraq published the proceedings as two regular volumes of the society's journal, Iraq (vol. 76 and vol. 77, part 2), as well as a special two-volume conference edition. Other than the cover art, there is no difference between the two publications. With these volumes BSAI has produced another publication that is excellent in every respect: the illustrations are clear and well labeled; references and bibliography uniform, and the editing exemplary.

The first paper in volume one appropriately concerns the city of Nineveh itself. Marc Van De Mie-roop's "A Tale of Two Cities: Nineveh and Babylon" explores the metaphorical and symbolic role of these cities in royal literature.
