Indeed, while Americans' eyes remain squarely focused on health, that no longer means denial. Kathy Glazer, owner of Glazer Nutrition Counseling Services, Falls Church, Va., recently told the web site www. readexpress.com that health-conscious Americans can still enjoy frozen desserts as long as they watch their portion sizes.

"If you have healthy diet, you can have a treat 10% to 20% of the time," says Glazer. "Start by choosing a frozen dessert that's low in calories and fats, such as sorbet--which is basically fruit, sugar and ice--then eat only one or two scoops." Gelato and frozen yogurt, she added, "can be lighter than regular ice cream, as well."

Health and wellness "continues to be an important consumer trend," confirms Joyce Hodel, a spokesperson for Kraft Foods Inc., Northfield, Ill., whose portfolio of products includes Cool Whip. "In fact, our Jell-O brand has continued its successful Red Carpet Ready promotion in 2008 because our sugar-free refrigerated Jell-O pudding and gelatin cups are low in calories, yet satisfy consumers' desires for a luscious dessert."

Kraft continues to invest in health and wellness offerings across its portfolio, Hodel reports. "We think consumers will continue to want desserts that are both 'better for you' and that taste delicious." She cites American Diabetes Association statistics that say more than 20-million people in the US have diabetes, and more than 50 million are considered to have prediabetes.
