The Showalter affair with photography actually dates back to the honeymoon of Allen's parents in the mid-1950s. Conan and Joyce Showalter returned from their Hawaii honeymoon, and Conan decided he could do a better job photo processing after seeing his trip pictures. He installed a darkroom and was soon doing his own processing in addition to his full-time job of running a dairy farm.
"It occurred to him this may be a better way to make a living than milking cows," says Showalter. Still, it took some time to convince the rest of the family to make the change. By 1965, Allen's grandfather, Elmer David "Bunch" Showalter, was ready to make the change.
"They sold the herd and remodeled the dairy parlor into a photo lab," says Showalter. "We had to build just a little bit onto the milking parlor. I remember playing in the crates our Kodak dip-and-dunk processor came in. At that time, I could fit through the...
