Marvin Gaye says it best when his voice croons, "Sexual healing is something that's good for me ..." In my opinion, it's not only something that is good for him; it's something that is good for you, for me, for everybody. Love and sex are two key ingredients for an individual's happy life. Everybody needs to be nurtured, encouraged, supported, and allowed to express himself or herself sexually and to share the experience with someone they care for. Sustaining a spinal cord injury paralyzed me physically; it did not paralyze my need and desire for love and sex. If anything, it magnified it. Let's be honest, there aren't many things better than spending intimate time with your partner when you are feeling bad and need a boost in spirit. In the word "intimate," I am encompassing sex and love and all that's in between--any physical or emotional form of communication or expression in a positive relationship between two people. Why the majority of society thinks that anyone with a disease or injury or disability that alters the way their body functions also suddenly loses their desire to embrace love and sex is something I will never understand.
