The day before Hurricane Katrina struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Waveland Furniture Liquidators was the largest used furniture dealer in South Mississippi, widely known for its purple building that customers could spot from a distance on U.S. 90. The day after the storm, the owners, Dan and Lauree Marine, were searching for a mattress to sleep on.

"Our business was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina," said Lauree. "Our store was left standing with only four walls. All the existing merchandise was totally wiped out."
