Democrat Travis Childers win in Mississippi's First Congressional District race gave the state another few moments of attention by the national media.

The reason for such importance being attached to a race like this in a fairly rural district had to do with the unexpected nature of the Democrats winning a district that was listed by many national observers as a Republican safe seat. The First District had been nurtured to its solidly Republican status over 14 years by former incumbent and now Mississippi's newest senator, Roger Wicker.

The Democratic win in the Mississippi First was simply an exclamation point on a trend that had begun with the Democrats winning the Illinois seat held for many years by retired long time Republican United States House Speaker Dennis Hastert and a similar Democratic victory in a Louisiana House seat...
