It is estimated that 1.9mn people-almost 60 per cent of Nairobi's population-Live in informal settlements. Such sprawling slums like Mathare, Kibera, Korogocho and Mukuru kwa Njenga are home to the city's teeming masses.
Most of the urban poor want to have decent housing but every step in that direction - from acquiring land to build the basic unit, to obtaining financing, households face limited options. Increasingly the urban poor have been teaming up to salvage themselves from poor housing.
In the recent past, Jamii Bora Trust has been able to complete 246 of the planned 2000 units for its members - drawn mainly from the city slums.
Started as an investment club of 50 beggars nine years ago, Jamii Bora Trust has grown into the largest microfinance institute in Kenya, with over 170,000 members. It has 72 branches, 140 outlets and over 300 employees countrywide.
