Henry's markets find local soil fertile ground for organic produce: county no. 1 in nation for growing crops naturally.

San Diego County is home to the largest community of organic farming in the country, according to the most recent San Diego County Crop Statistics & Annual Report compiled in 2006.

With 317 local growers of organic produce in 2006, the county produced more than 140 different crops that year, ranging from oranges, grapes and avocados to unusual crops such as cherimoyas, loquats and jujubes, according to the crop report.

Up from $3.6 billion in 1997, U.S. sales of organic foods and beverages have grown to $16.9 billion in 2006, according to the Food Marketing Institute's latest report. The Arlington, Va.-based Food Marketing Institute promotes policies and programs for U.S. food retailers and wholesalers.
