Article Excerpt Lincoln County experienced a 5.7% population growth between 2006 and 2007, adding just over 2,000 persons, to become South Dakota's fastest growing county, according to population estimates released March 14, 2008 by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Three counties accounted for 90% of the numerical growth in South Dakota (7,747) between 2006 and 2007. Minnehaha experienced a growth of 3,466 (2.0%), Lincoln added 2,028 (5.7%) and Pennington grew by 1,475 (1.6%) persons. Those 3 counties make up 39% of the state's total 2007 population.
Counties with the greatest loss included Campbell (-5.0%), Hyde (-4.3%) and Potter (-3.7%), mainly due to out-migration.
Between Census 2000 and 2007, South Dakota grew by 5.5%, an increase of 41,370 persons. Again, the fastest growing county was Lincoln, with an increase of 56.4% (13,618 persons). Minnehaha came in second with an increase of 18.2% (27,007 persons), followed by Hanson county with an increase of 15.4% (482 persons).
