After a career in corporate communications, Larry Ragan launched The Ragan Report for corporate communicators in 1968. He later said that "If you want to build a newsletter empire, it probably isn't a good idea to name the first title after yourself and write it in your own inimitable fashion." But the newsletter and the company succeeded and Ragan became a founding member of the newsletter association and later board president.

By 1992 Ragan had grown to publishing a half dozen newsletters and doing many seminars and conferences with an annual revenue in the range of $1.2 million. That year, after 15 years spent largely in newspaper journalism, Mark Ragan came home to Chicago and joined the firm.

"My dad probably assumed I'd want to be editorial director, but I think I surprised him when I said what I wanted was the chance to run the company."

It turned out Mark was pretty good at it, and by 1997 Ragan had grown both in newsletter circulation and what used to be called ancillaries. Overall revenues had reached the level of $6 million.
