How can I explain my feelings about my country Israel on the 60th anniversary of its independence? I think if I tell the story of my family in Israel, it will speak for itself.

My father's family came to Israel at the beginning of the 20th century in the second aliyah of the pioneer generation from Russia, which also sent David BenGurion to Israel. My mother's family left Germany for Israel at the beginning of Hitler's infamous rule. Cousins of mine who remained in Germany were murdered by the Nazis in the Shoah.

My father, Yonatan Belinkov was not one who talked much about the past; what I know about his own heroism and that of his family comes mainly from stories told to me by my mother, Dvora.
