Turkey is part of the US-led alliance. More important where Ankara is concerned is an alliance update since 1996, when a Kemalist government committed Turkey to a geo-strategic partnership with each of Israel and the US; that was months before an Islamist party under Necmettin Erbacan came to power in Ankara and turned things upside-down for the country's Kemalist establishment. The TAF had to topple Erbacan's government in a coup in 1998 as he was getting close to the Shi'ite theocracy through schemes, including a gas supply deal, which were to cut across the triangular partnership.
Erdogan, an ex-aide to Erbacan, got his Justice and Development Party (AKP) - a more subtle evolution of Erbacan's - to win the elections in early November 2002...
