Article Excerpt Dear Mr./Ms. President:
America desperately needs an education president. You won't find support for this in public opinion polls. Education has declined as a national priority. It was the first or second highest ranked issue by voters in the 2000 election. The electorate rated it fifth in 2004. In the election you just won, it was overshadowed by the war, terrorism, health care, the economy, energy, immigration, and a host of social concerns ranging from abortion to gay marriage.
The reason is not that the nation's education challenges have been met or that the need for better education has abated. It is simply a matter of demographics. The baby boomers, who comprise more than half the electorate, made education a national priority. Their children were going to school, and they wanted the best possible schools for them. Today, their children have largely completed K-12 schooling, and the baby boomers have turned their attention to their parents, who are increasingly frail and require...
