The big news this season was Mauro Bigonzetti's world premiere Oltremare (Beyond the Sea). It transformed the stage at State Theater into a dark place, full of uncertainty yet rich with emotion.
Gone were the upright, clean, pure bodies with sparkling tutus or sleek leotards. In their place was a band of immigrants wearing muted, Fellini-esque layers of clothing, each with an old-world suitcase.

Fourteen dancers troop in single file with their suitcases. When they all duck at the exact same moment, it seems too orderly, too unison. But the ballet is weighted, evocative, and develops with a gritty sense of reality. Andrew Veyette is terrific as a passionate, troubled, almost desperate working class man. Georgina Pazcoguin, in an ochre dress with black hair flying, matches his wildness. He pulls her up so forcefully from a distance that she seems to fly toward him. The duet with...
