On a winter afternoon several months ago, Kathryn Morgan was rehearsing for her debut as the Sugar Plum Fairy in New York City Ballet's Nutcracker. Under the tutelage of ballet master in chief Peter Martins' assistant Sean Lavery and teaching associate Merrill Ashley, she ran through the grand pas with principal Gonzalo Garcia. Helping her prepare for her first lead in the Balanchine repertoire, the coaches paid close attention to details. Ashley focused on the expressiveness of Morgan's feet, while Lavery worked on the partnering. "Let him drive you," he urged, as Morgan tried to do too much on her own, a frequent tendency in young dancers with technical assurance.
