COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Although 8.9 million American households are home to at least one person who is completely deaf in one ear, a recent study shows that one-third of them have not sought treatment. The finding that 3.2 million cases go unaddressed raises questions about how many Americans suffering from Single Sided Deafness (SSD) also go undiagnosed.

The study further revealed that while one out of every four people knows someone suffering with SSD, the same proportion says that person has not sought treatment.

"These figures amplify the importance of deaf awareness by underscoring the grossly underreported prevalence of SSD," said Dr. Jack Wazen, Chief of Otology/Neurotology and the Medical Director of the Vestibular Rehabilitation Center at Lenox Hill/Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital...
